365 Project 1.10.11

Evergreen

I have two images today. We had our website go down yesterday for several hours so I was unable to post anything.
We had snow yesterday. So I went looking for an image. I found this snow covered evergreen and started shooting. I ended up walking in about 4-5 inches of snow in my dress shoes and soaked pants up to my knees.. Living in Wisconsin you think I'd have a pair of boots to slip on. I shot several images and liked this one the best.

Snow & Brambles

Lots of lake effect snow today. I drove through the park looking for images. I love when the snow clings to all the trees. I found this spot with all the brambles covered with snow. I really like how busy crazy this image is with the snow. I wanted to show how tangled up the brush has grown. You don't see this in the summer because everything is covered with leaves.

Tree Line & Clouds

I had to really search for this image today. I had gone to three other locations and came away with nothing. I was beginning to worry that I might not find anything. I was to this location several days ago but did not see this small ridge with these trees. I instantly thought  that this would work in black & white. I shot several different versions of this image. I isolated several trees and also shot some vertical images. In the end I kept coming back to this panoramic version. I think this image works because of the clouds. If the sky was clear I don' think it would have worked at all.

Oak Tree Trunks

It was very sun this afternoon when I went looking for an image. I drove again along the Menominee River again but 2-3 miles north. I thought I would find a nice scenic image of the frozen river. I got out of my truck and walked towards the river. Not thirty feet from the truck was this awesome oak tree with multiple trunks. I shot a few images then walked down the river bank about 50 yards looking for more images. I wanted to wait a bit till the sun was a  lower creating more texture on the bark. I walked back and shot several more images. I also adjusted my color balance in the camera as a shot. After I got the images in photo shop I liked the cooler looking image that I posted here.

Geese on the Menominee River

I drove along the river this morning looking for an image and didn't find anything. Later this afternoon I went back out looking for an image and drove back down to the river. I actually saw a huge downed tree on the other side of the river. So I drove across the river and found a spot to park and grabbed my gear. As I approached the river near the downed tree I came upon the opening in the ice and all the geese. There was a light snow falling which gives the water a speckled look. This image really works well as a panoramic. I was very happy to find my image for the day and get out of the extreme cold. It was only 6 above zero.

1.6.11
Snowy Roof

I had been noticing the patterns on several roof tops since the light snow we had late yesterday. It was just a dusting of snow which created some great textures on the roof tops. Somehow I knew I had an image, I just had to wait till the light was right. I came back later when the sun and just crested over the roof top creating some really strong side lighting and a great texture on the roof. I really like the simplicity of this image.

365 Project 1.5.11

1.5.11
Snow Covered Thistle

I stopped by a park to photograph an interesting birch tree. The lighting on the birch was pretty flat and quite boring. So I continued to wander a bit and found these thistles underneath the edge of some small pines. I shot several variations of these thistles with different points of focus. I liked this one the best.

Wauwatosa Train Trestle 1.4.11

1.4.11
Wauwatosa Train Trestle

While I was running an errand I was also looking for an image. I have seen this trestle for years and always wanted to photograph it but never had the time. So I parked my truck and walked about a city block to get the view I was looking for. It was very cold and I was not properly dressed. I shot about two dozen images and could not take the cold any longer.
I was looking for a really industrial type of an image. I did some cross processing and added some textures in photo shop but did not like what I was getting. Then I took the image in another direction and this is what really jumped out at me.

My 365 Project

I have decided to challenge myself creatively over the next year. I will take one photograph a day, process it in photo shop and post it to my blog. One image that I feel can hang as fine art piece.  I feel this will be a way for me to grow my vision over this next year. This will be a huge challenge photographically and mentally. So posted below are the first few days.
1.1.11
Winter Walnut Tree
The first day of the year was cloudy. The clouds had a ripple effect going but I needed something else to go with it. So I found my neighbors black walnut tree. I wanted to portray the coldness of the day so I added a blue tone to the entire image. I think the blue tone works very well.

1.2.11
Window Frost
I noticed the frost on my hallway window when I headed downstairs in the morning. So I grabbed my camera and started shooting. I liked this image the best. Just a hit of the morning sun shining through.

1.3.11
Morning Sunrise
I photographed this right outside in my front yard. I must have looked funny in my jammy pants, slippers and my winter coat. The colors were amazing and only lasted about a minute.I was glad to have my camera close at hand.
