Big Sky

I love the fall in Wisconsin. The colors seem more intense and I find the skies amazing. I love this image especially the sky and the clouds. When I get the time I like to shoot fine art images. Finding the time is the key. I hope to have my fine art gallery up on the website soon after the holidays. My images will be available for limited edition print purchases and greeting cards.I hope you take some time to enjoy this fall before the snow flies.

A Blue Ribbon Award at the Natioonal Print Competition

I titled this print Eli. This is actually a portrait of my cousin while we were in northern Wisconsin, which is where my family is originally from. I still have an uncle who is 83 and lives on the old family homestead. He still heats his house with a wood burning furnace. So every February all the nephews and a few uncles get together to cut wood for my uncle, sort of a guy’s weekend. We bring our chainsaws and play around with some of the old vintage tractors. We started calling this Lumberjack Weekend.

It was during one of these weekends that I created this portrait. The lighting was perfect; his expression and his rugged look were awesome. The snow on the ground provided me with a great reflector. After playing around with this image in photo shop I thought it worked best in black and white. I was very happy when the image merited and received a blue ribbon at the Professional Photographers of America's national print competition this past summer.

How much is a family portrait worth?

People walk into my studio 5-6 times a year with a snapshot of a loved one who is no longer with them. This person died suddenly and now all they have is this snapshot that they want me to do something with. They ask, can you blow this up or insert it in an older family photo? Unfortunately, I’ve never been able to do anything for them. And now this is all they have, their snapshot. The really sad thing is they all said the same thing during our conversation, I /we really meant to have a portrait done but now it’s too late.

A long time ago I lived in California and did some portraits for a family I knew. They never ordered anything. I was very disappointed. About four years later after I moved back to Milwaukee I received a phone call. It was from one of the sisters. She had tracked me down. Their only brother died in an auto accident, he was in his mid thirties. She remembered that they had  a portrait session with me and but never ordered anything. Luckily I kept everything. In the end, they were able to have some wonderful images of their family and of him. She was so thankful and so was I.

Please don’t let another holiday or family get together go by without scheduling your family portrait. I want to see you now with your family, not later with a snapshot in your hand.

Dogs Gone Arwy

I had a really fun session in the park last week with Skye, Chris, Alec and their dogs Grover and Laya.
Skye said that the dogs hadn't been to the park in a while so they were pretty wound up. It was so funny! I just kept shooting all the antics. We got some great images in the end. I even got a great shot of Alec by himself. Chris you did a great job with the dogs!

This warm fall weather has allowed me to get out to the park and photograph several families providing some great memories and portraits.

Shed & Patina

Today we went to the Cana Island Light House. We were going to go to Fish Creek put it was really busy with people so we decided to avoid it. While at the lighthouse I found this wonderful old shed. The patina on this shed was amazing. I wanted to take one whole wall home with me.

Door County Sunset

Last nite I enjoyed a beautiful sunset and a bottle of Blackberry wine with my wife. I can't think of any other way to rest and re-fill my creative well. Today we will explore Fish Creek and Door County Peninsula State Park.

Drawing from the Well

Where do you get your creativity? I'm often asked this question. I have always felt that my creativity is like a well that you draw water from. What do you do when your well runs dry? You need to refill and recharge it. I am refilling my well this weekend. I'm taking a weekend in northern Wisconsin to re-fill the well and recharge. No phones, website or facebook. Just me and my wife.
